Reasons for the different narrative structure are:
1.pop videos are built around songs-and often songs do not pose traditional narrative structures.
(A traditional narrative structure is normality-problem-resolution)
2.The pop video uses the singer both as narrator and as a character.
(We can sew how in this music video called "Telephone ft Beyonce" the artist Lady Gaga is used as singer as well as a narrator.)
3.The singer often look directly to involve the viewer at home with the performance.
(This is use to engage the audience and also gives a special personality or style to the artist.)
We can see how she looks at the camera to have that connection with the audience. This image is taken from the video "Bad Romance" by Lady Gaga |
Pop videos rely on repetition. Often videos repeats images in the way the song repeats choruses or lines. The repetition of rhythms of other songs means that we become familiar with the genre and have certain expectations.
Sometimes producers and directors have different visions of what a song is about; sometimes the videos might be promoting other commodities such as films. Therefore it can be said tat there are
3 types of relations between songs and videos:
1. Illustration: This is where the video tells the story of the lyric. As an example of this is the music video of the song called "3-way (The golden Rule), this video shows exactly what the lyric are saying at the time the singer sings.
2. Amplification: Occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. As an example of this is the music video of a song called "In the end" by Liking Park; the song is about a relationship but the video is making a reference of the end of the world.
3. Disjuncture: This is where there is a little connection between the lyric and or where the video contradicts the lyric. As an example of this is the music video of a song called "You are beautiful" by James Blunt; this song is about a beautiful woman but the video show us the artist singing by himself.
Pop videos often have easily recognisable features. This is used to help the audience with a visual aid to recognise the artist. Another feature is the way women are presented as objects of male desire. This is particularly true of heavy metal and hip hop videos. In some videos the different instruments in the music are represented by different objects. Videos trying to appeal a wide range would use clothing of the 60s or 70s to appeal to that old audience.
