Research-Carole Vernallis

Carole Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She observer that edits in music video come much more frequently than in film, that many stand out as disjuncture and that editing seem to have rhytmic basis closely connected to the song.

Main points of her observations:

The ussual rules of "continuity" are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen. The editing is not conventional; it has not a clear narrarive to follow and jump cuts are often used.The editing is ver obvious and the master shot is frecuently used to give the video a structure.

A video music that follow these points is "Take a bow" by Rhianna


A video that do not follow these points is "Wanna be" by The spice girls
