Research-Structure of the Record Industry

The record indrustry has 2 sides:
1.Mainstream labels: Large organisations with revenue available for different acts and are therefor able to saturate markets and offer high production values on promotional material.

This are know as the big 3 which are : Universal Music Group, Sony Music Group and  Warner Music Group. EMI used to be one of the conglomerates but it was buy by Universal Music Group.
 
 
 Each of these, own lots of smaller, subsidiary labels that specialise in different genres/ areas of market, which enable the big 3 to dominate most markets.

2.Independent Labels: separate to and operate independently of the mainstream labels. Often operate witin niche genres (small target audience) and cater to a specific market. As an example of this these are independent record labels based in the United Kingdom. These labels are indepented from the big 3. 
-Andmoresound
-Angular Recording Corporation
-Bad Sekta
-Candid Records
-Criminal Records

Who owns the music?
The aim of the artist is to be signed to a label in order to promote their music and sell albums but the major profit is get by the record label who is who owns the copyrights.
