RESEARCH - Analysing Media Language, Carol Vernallis

Carol Vernallis specialises in studying camerawork and editing closely in music videos. She has recognised that edits in music videos are much more frequent than in films. Also the rhythmic of the song is closely connected to the editing.
Main edits observed:
  • Jump cuts
  • Obvious edits, such as wipes and special effects are often used
  •  ‘continuity’ editing is broken down in order to draw attention to what is shown on screen
  • A base track is frequently used to give the music video a structure
  • The camera may move in time with the music

Here is an example which reflects Carol Vernalli's theory. The music video contains quite a lot of jump cuts that have been used to show the chemistry between Rita Ora and Tinie Tempah.
Rita Ora Ft. Tinie Tempah - R.I.P

Below I have created four moodboards.  Each one of them consist of different moods.

The following shots are constantly repeated throughout the music video.
Frequently extreme close-ups of Rita Ora's facial features are emphasised, which I find very effective to the music video.
The camera shots below are mainly jump cuts which are shown in between of Rita Ora's performance and also in the similar way as Tinie Tempah performs.
